How the split is calculated

The tip amount is your bill total multiplied by your chosen tip percentage, and the grand total is the bill plus that tip. When splitting between multiple people, both the total and the tip are divided evenly by the number of people entered — an even split, rather than dividing based on what each person individually ordered.

In the US, 15 to 20 percent is typical for sit-down restaurant service, with 18 to 20 percent common for good service. Norms vary a lot by country and service type.

Either is common practice. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is slightly more common, but the difference is usually small, so use whichever amount you have handy.
